Put the Teakettle On

When was the last time you put the teakettle on? Notwithstanding the health benefits of most teas, that is only one reason to get the teakettle out. I am amazed at the number of people who heat their tea water in a microwave or hot brewing system - after all, it is quicker.

To me, a cup of tea is a very personalized event. I actually enjoy just the cheery look of my bright apple green teakettle on the stovetop. Of course, there are also a few favorite mugs to go with the event depending on my spirit at that time. The anticipation gives me time to choose and prepare my leaves (or teabags) to brew. This usually prompts a pensive 'hmmmm...' as I gaze over the many choices.

Even the sound of the whistling is a personal call, as we each received it's announcement of boiling water. The melodic voices of dancing bubbles invoke delight for me. The steam invites me to the warmth of the moments to come. Now it is time to merge the tea leaves with the boiled water, which prompts a science lesson. Think back to grandma always putting a spoon into the delicate teacup. The metal spoon is actually a heat conductor for your favorite mug, as well as a way to remove my teabag.

So whether it's a cup of tea for yourself, or even more fun yet with a friend or a group of friends, try to make it an event rather than the quickest way to get the job done. Now the calming curve of your hand around a warm mug becomes a retreat. With a friend or two, it is also cradled in the comfort of conversation.

For those of you who prefer coffee, of course this can be experienced in much the same way. It's all about taking the time to brew, drip, and wait for your hot, comforting beverage.

…always be the love that YOU are
