Tell Me About Yourself

Quite often, when we meet new people, or have to introduce ourselves at meetings or new groups, someone will say, "Tell me about yourself.” The "go-to” response is to tell them what we do or did for a living, what we have, or what we like rather than who we are. Many times I have had the opportunity to “share out” a snippet of me. On occasion, I would sometimes feel that I sold myself short, because I only told them what I did….I did not tell them about ME. I know there's a fine line here, but we are so used to identifying ourselves with how we make a living rather than how we live. In an ideal world, the two of these are aligned, but we still tend to focus on what we do for a living. What you do is not who you are in most cases. It is a perspective of your job description versus your character. Who are you at the core, at your heart center and purpose? It is not the what, but the how you do your job that is more indicative of your personality. It is your character that should be pervasive in your job or how you live each day. Do you exude integrity, honesty, and purpose? If I have to tell someone about myself, it would be about my essence - the me that drives my choices and is ultimately the me that you see. So, here is me, myself, and I: (from my perspective) Each day when I wake up, I know that God has a purpose for me – so I smile, breathe, and do my best to achieve. I have a passion for writing. I have an intrinsic need to create happiness and beauty. I have an attitude of gratitude for each blessing of the day. I believe in being the love that I am - to all, equally. If someone were interested, they might ask how that relates to my life. This is where the rubber meets the road…. Well, generally, again I thank God each day that I am here. I have my mornings free to create, write, ‘sing the songs of my heart’, and photograph the beauty I feel in my heart. I am blessed to have a job as a companion aide to a sweet, dear woman who teaches me to laugh, models the importance of loving memories, and view the world in different ways. She unknowingly reminds me as I watch her body try to do what she knows it once did, that I am grateful for each day I can walk with ease. I spend the rest of my time trying to balance the love that I am with family, friends, neighbors, and all of the wonderful people and events that my life brings. The rest of the story reflects the details that change within the minutes, hours, and days that most often honor the me that only I can be – the me that runs through my veins. My pulse may be stronger on some days than others, and I will waver, but it is me. So, look inside and think about the beauty of you, so the next time someone asks you to share a little bit about yourself you are ready. …always be the love that YOU are! You will be pleasantly surprised to greet the essence of you.
