Memories are recollections and storage of past events and ideas. Most of us have multiple storage spaces for these events. Some are on film, in photos, or on electronic devices. Some of them are the ones that we simply store with us in our hearts or minds. Have you ever found yourself saying or thinking, “Who knew I would look back at this someday as one of my fondest memories! “ I am referring here to the good ones – the memories that will make you smile as they comfort you like a blanket on a cold day. I recognize that all memories are not like that, but each new day is an opportunity to help crowd the sorrowful memories out. Even the fond memories are static in the respect that they represent the past. Without recognizing a collection of today’s moments, life will leave you without any new experiences to treasure. When I hear people say that the memories are all that they have left, I view that as a positive - a wonderful thing! Let’s rejoice in the gift that life was good enough to give us precious moments to remember. Give gratitude for each day, person, or event that your life is blessed with. Also, recognize that as long as God gave you breath to see the light of another day – he gave you the opportunity to create more joy. The creating is up to you! Think of a friend, family member, or elderly neighbor that you may not have talked with in a while. Reach out with a phone call or visit, and make that reconnection your fond memory of the day - and undoubtedly it will be theirs as well.
All of our senses initiate responses of memories. The sounds, the sights, the comforting touching of another’s hand, and various tastes and smells in our environment will often trigger these responses. I love being in the present moment when an unexpected thought or memory of the past floods me with sweet memories. Sometimes it is just a general feeling of happiness rather than a specific memory. I think the sense of smell, like your favorite childhood baked good is the most common trigger. Anytime I smell tomatoes and/or garlic cooking, I am back in my grandmother’s kitchen! Now there’s a memory!
The stillness of a calm summer day, seeing children at the playground, watching a parade, or seeing friends share coffee time all can make you sigh inward with that I remember when feeling. So enjoy all of those memories that bring a happy sigh or smile – but remember – the best thing about memories is making them!
…always be the love that you are called to be, and live each day as a cherished memory
